Walking in the summer through the Lionserpolder I noticed a particular small gras meadow of nearly 160 m2. Farmer Stremler was mowing this tiny and bumpy meadow using a 5,5 m. wide tractor and mower. I thought; in heavens name how could it be possible that such a tiny meadow still exists? This winter I asked him about this extensive way of farming using the feltscape as a conversation piece. He recognized the meadows he was leasing of Natuurmonumenten. Once he leveled many meadows in Friesland but times are changing. Today he is a biological farmer appreciating the cultural landscape of the Lionserpolder. He showed me his meadow called “Kromme Soane” with even more relief caused by the tidal of the sea but also made by farmers in the Middle Ages!
