HET BOS VAN ASSEN

Het Bos van Assen is een artistiek landschapsonderzoek naar het Asserbos als entiteit; een bos verweven met de locale bewoners van Assen en het globale klimaat. Wij mensen willen veel van het bos; we hebben economische, ecologische, culturele en recreatieve belangen en idealen. Maar hoe reageert het Asserbos zelf op de cultiveringsactiviteiten van de mens en de klimaatveranderingen?

In deze tijd, waarin het klimaat steeds onvoorspelbaarder wordt, zijn we ons bewust van het belang van bos. Bomen functioneren als CO2 opslag en helpen mee de opwarmende aarde te verkoelen. Bos wordt gewaardeerd als recreatieve wandelomgeving, maar ook om de biodiversiteit, de ecologische waarde. Veel bos in Nederland, ook het Asserbos, is ontstaan en in cultuur gebracht door mensen. Deze cultiveringsgeschiedenis is af te lezen aan de sporen die de mens in het Asserbos heeft achtergelaten.

Dit project wil deze sporen leesbaar maken en bijdragen aan bewustwording van het bestaan van lokale bos voor het globale klimaat.

LOKATIE

Het Asserbos is gelegen aan de zuidrand van Assen, de provinciehoofdstad van Drenthe in Nederland. De naamgeving van de stad Assen verwijst naar de boomsoort, essen, die de omgeving in het verleden hebben gekenmerkt. Het Asserbos wordt ook wel Sterrenbos genoemd. Dit is te danken aan de rationele uitbreiding in de 18^e eeuw met vele rechte en kruisende lanen. Latere ingrepen hebben de lanen en paden structuur zodanig uitgebreid dat er uiteindelijk een hecht verknoopt wandelnetwerk is ontstaan.

KAARTEN

Het project het Bos van Assen wordt verbeeld en beschreven in mijn blog en tastbaar gemaakt door vervilte kaarten, feltscapes. Ook verschijnen er thematische wandelkaarten, waarin naast tekst en beeld, een route is opgenomen die de wandelaar nieuwe perspectieven biedt op het Asserbos. Deze thematische wandelkaarten kunnen vanaf 15 oktober 2021 worden gedownload of aangeschaft.

CARTOGRAFISCH ONDERZOEK

Als kunstenaar en landschapsonderzoeker kenmerkt mijn onderzoek zich door het doen van observaties, archiefonderzoek, gesprekken en door het maken van landkaarten in vilt. Het maakproces van vilt brengt mij als onderzoeker dichter bij het cultiveringsproces van landschap en brengt op artistieke wijze landschapsonderzoek in beeld.

Het project het Bos van Assen is vanaf 2020 van start gegaan en is een doorlopend project.

THE FOREST OF ASSEN

The Forest of Assen is an artistic landscaperesearch into the Asserbos as an entity; a forest intertwined with the local inhabitants of Assen and the global climate change. We humans want a lot from the forest; we have economic, environmental, cultural and recreational interests and ideals. But how does the Asserbos itself respond to the cultivation activities of humans?

In this time, in which the climate is becoming increasingly unpredictable, we are aware of the importance of forests. Trees function as CO2 storage and help to cool down the warming effect on earth. Forest is valued as a recreational walking environment, but also for its biodiversity, its ecological value. A lot of forest in the Netherlands, including the Asserbos, was created and cultivated by people. This cultivation history can be read from the traces left by man in the Asserbos.

This project wants to make these traces legible and contribute to awareness of the existence of local forest for the global climate.

LOCATION

The Asserbos is located on the southern fringe of Assen, the provincial capital of Drenthe in the Netherlands. The name of the city of Assen refers to the tree species, ash, which have characterized the area in the past. The Asserbos is also called Sterrenbos. This is due to the rational expansion in the 18th century with many straight and intersecting avenues. Subsequent interventions have expanded the avenues and paths structure to such an extent that a closely woven walking network was eventually created.

MAPPING

The project Forest of Assen is depicted and described in my blog and made tangible by felted cartographic maps, feltscapes. Thematic walking maps are also published, in which, in addition to text and images, a route is included that offers the walker new perspectives on the Asserbos. These thematic walking maps can be downloaded or purchased from October 15, 2021.

CARTOGRAPHIC RESEARCH

As an artist and landscape researcher, my research is characterized by making observations, archival research, conversations and by making maps in felt. The making process of felt brings me as a researcher closer to the cultivation process of landscape and visualises landscape research in an artistic way.

The project Forest of Assen started in September 2020 and is an ongoing project.
